MEGLUSAN - Meglumine antimoniate

Composition: every ampoule of 5 ml contains 1,5 g of meglumine antimoniate (DCI), product of synthesis rich in antimony (Sb 28,3%). Each bulb contains 425mg of Sb.

Formula: meglumine antimoniate 1500 mg potassium metabisulfite 4mg  - water for injection p.f. 5 ml. 

Indications: intestinal (Kala azar) and cutaneous (trouser Button) leishmaniose.

Posology: the treatment is under regulation of the doctor. The injections are done by deep intramuscular way.

Series of 12 to 15 daily injections, with 15 days of interruption between each series of injections.

As an indication, the usual dosis are:   

Adults: 60 to 100 Mg of meglumine antimoniate per kg of weight, every day.                

Children:  1,2 g per 10 kg of weight, every day. 2,1 g per 20 kg of weight, every day.

               Intermediate dose should be calculated on the basis dosage

For 1st and the 2nd injection, use the half-amount indicated. 

Contra-indications:

Serious cardio pathos, hepatic or renal insufficiencies.

Interactions: no available datas today. 

Side effects: a momentary feverish reaction can accompany the treatment, with sweat.

Exceptionally, antimony can give a reaction of allergy or rejection and impose to give up the treatment.

Intoxication and its treatment: The pentavalent antimony derivatives are tolerated better than the trivalent derivatives. Case of acute intoxication in the form of gastro-intestinal disorders (vomiting, diarrhoea), of coetaneous demonstrations like urticaria or cardiovascular disorders, Dimercaprol is advised like antidote.

In the event of overdose or of accidental ingestion, consult a hospital service or the national Poisons centre.
